The Pros and Cons of Botox

Friday, 30 June 2017

Botox treatment is one of the most common, non-surgical cosmetic procedures currently available. It’s a popular choice for those who want to soften those fine lines and lose a few years, whether it’s for an important meeting or interview, a special event or simply to look a little younger.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

The use of Botox for cosmetic purposes took off towards the end of the 1990s and into the first part of 2000. It utilises the Botulinum toxin in very small doses which, when injected directly into the muscle, can soften the effects of wrinkling and reduce the signs of aging. Prior to its adoption as a cosmetic procedure, Botox was widely used for numerous medical conditions such as asymmetry around the mouth, crossed eyes, muscle spasms and stiffness.

THE BENEFITS OF BOTOX

  • For those who don’t want to undergo a more invasive, surgical procedure, Botox provides a short-term method to reduce the effects of ageing.
  • It’s a low-cost solution and the impact is usually seen quickly, patients noticing significant changes within a few of hours up to a couple of days.
  • Botox has been shown to reduce wrinkles and the lines that you get with certain facial expressions, for example when you smile or laugh.
  • It’s a quick procedure to administer. You should expect an area to be treated within about five to ten minutes and there is very little pain, bruising or redness to contend with.
  • The effects can last between three and six months before you might need a ‘top up’.
  • Finally, it’s a safe procedure, though practitioners will tell you not to have it if you are pregnant.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF BOTOX

  • For most people, this is a temporary procedure, so if you are looking for a more permanent solution to the signs of ageing you might want to look at the surgical option.
  • Botox needs to be administered by a professional with medical experience. This is a toxin that needs to be injected in just the right place at the right dosage to produce a natural and more youthful appearance.
  • Poorly administered Botox injections can leave your face looking stretched and with a surprised expression that people will certainly notice.
  • While it’s less expensive than the surgical alternative, Botox is still expensive and, because it’s a temporary option, regular treatments can cost a lot of money over time.

IS BOTOX RIGHT FOR YOU?

With mild side effects, if any, for most people, Botox is the perfect solution if you want to give your face a quick lift. You might be getting married for example and want a smoother complexion or you may be going for an important interview. If you are looking for a quick and easy treatment that does exactly what you need, then Botox is obviously an attractive option.

For those looking at a longer-term option, then other procedures might need to be considered. Some professionals will say that having Botox injections on a regular basis does put you at more risk from the longer-term side effects such as a weakening of the facial muscles. Others maintain that it is a perfectly safe procedure and regular top ups can help you stay looking youthful. One aspect you will have to consider however is the cost of having injections on a long-term, three or six-monthly basis compared to a more expensive surgical procedure.

Botox injections remain one of the most popular cosmetic procedures around today and can certainly knock some years off your appearance. Contact Rupesh today for an informal chat or to arrange a consultation.
